MIAMI (AP) The founder of a major Hispanic food company has died in his South Florida home. He was 79.

Jose Antonio Ortega Bonet, founder of Sazon Goya Food Company, died Saturday morning.

His wife of 55 years, Lucila, told The Associated Press he had lung cancer. She described her husband as a good person and philanthropist.

Ortega grew his business and began a partnership with New Jersey-based food giant Goya Foods in the 1960s.

Sazon Goya is a special mix of seasonings that adds flavor and color to food.

An e-mail was left Sunday for Goya’s press office.

Ortega was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1929. He moved his family to Puerto Rico in 1963, where he started a successful career in the food business that eventually became Sazon Goya.
