Ex-officer involved in accident has license suspended
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS (AP) – A former central Florida police officer who authorities say slammed into a car at more than 100 mph last November has had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days and ordered to pay about $1,000 in court fines.
Mark Maupin resigned earlier this year as an Altamonte Springs officer. He was found guilty of failure to use due care and failure to wear a seat belt. Maupin was sentenced Monday but did not appear in court.
His lawyer, Robert Fisher, told the judge that his client was “extremely sorry” about the accident.
Authorities say driver Jennifer Hernandez and Erskine Bell were injured when Maupin’s car hit them from behind. Bell remains in a coma.
Maupin has resigned. The Bell family settled with the city for $2.1 million earlier this year.
