MIAMI (AP) – Mexico and Miami? Maybe not the first combo that leaps to mind, but Mexico’s consulate and its cultural institute in Florida are hoping it soon will be.

On Wednesday, they kick off the region’s second annual festival of Mexican heritage with an art exhibition featuring portraits by Diego Rivera, Jesus Guerrero Galvan and nearly a a dozen other artists.

Florida’s Mexican population has nearly doubled over the last decade to roughly 600,000. The festival is an effort to unite the community and raise its profile.

The monthlong celebration includes musical presentations, film festivals, children’s events and more. The highlight is the fiesta Sept. 15.
