Crist interviews possible Senate replacements
TALLAHASSEE (AP) – Gov. Charlie Crist has expanded his search to replace Sen. Mel Martinez, who announced earlier this month that he would be leaving office.
The governor’s press office reports that Crist is scheduled to meet with State Rep. Jennifer Carroll and former Jacksonville Mayor and University of North Florida President John Delaney Wednesday in Jacksonville. Crist met with U.S. Attorney Roberto Martinez Tuesday in Miami.
Former Florida Attorney General and Florida Secretary of State Jim Smith and U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart previously had been named as possible replacements, but Diaz-Balart has withdrawn his name from consideration.
Mel Martinez announced Aug. 7 that he would step down 16 months before the end of his term. Crist himself has announced a run for the seat in 2010.
