Teen saves man who was mentoring him

ORMOND BEACH (AP) -A 17-year-old in Ormond Beach may have saved the life of his youth mentor.

Jim Rigdon, a longtime volunteer in the New Start program, was picking up trash at a church this week when he fell, started bleeding from his nose and couldn’t get up. Instead of joining him for a planned community service project, Ryan Nelson put Rigdon in his car.

Though Rigdon insisted the teen not make a big deal of the injury, Ryan drove him to the emergency room.

It turned out to be a good idea. Rigdon spent two nights in the hospital, dehydrated and suffering from an infection.

Rigdon says the youth he was mentoring proved to be smarter than him. He said, “If he hadn’t been there, I would have lain there and died.
