Bahamas shark bite victim recovering in Florida
WEST PALM BEACH (AP) – Florida hospital officials say a boy who was bitten by a shark in the Bahamas is in good condition.
The 14-year-old’s family chartered a plane and rushed him to West Palm Beach for treatment after suffering serious injuries from the shark bite last week.
Officials say he remained hospitalized Monday.
Family members say the boy was bitten while spearfishing with a group of people in the Bahamas on Friday. One of the men in the group caught a fish, and a nearby shark came to investigate. They say the shark then turned toward the boy and bit his leg.
Shark attacks are extremely rare. According to the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida’s Museum of Natural History, there were 59 worldwide last year, four of them fatal.
