Injunction lifted, Everglades work to resume
MIAMI (AP) – A federal judge in Miami has lifted an injunction that prevented the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from building a one-mile bridge on a road through the Everglades.
The Corps claims the bridge is needed to help restore natural water flow through the Everglades. The work was challenged by the Miccosukee Indians, who consider the Everglades their ancestral home.
U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro on Tuesday dismissed the case and lifted her previous injunction. She cited the 2009 Omnibus Act, in which Congress funded and ordered construction of the bridge. The judge says she no longer has jurisdiction.
The project is part of a multibillion-dollar plan to restore the Everglades.
The Miccosukee tribe plans to appeal.
