Report: Schools lagging in biology
TALLAHASSEE (AP) – A new study shows that Florida’s public school students are behind most other U.S. students when it comes to their comprehension of biological sciences.
The study released Monday divides the states into four categories and Florida is one of 10 states in the lowest group.
The ratings are based on national eighth grade tests in 2005 and high school advanced placement and ACT tests in 2008. Average scores showed Florida students ranked from 36th to 49th nationally in biology and overall science.
The study was done by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the Biotechnology Institute and Battelle, a nonprofit research group.
