Tampa police shoot suspect after car chase

TAMPA (AP) – Authorities say a Tampa man who was shot by police after a car chase has been released from a local hospital.

Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said Derrick Sheffield was released from a hospital Sunday night. He now faces several charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

According to a news release, Sheffield was driving a stolen car when authorities started the pursuit Sunday night. When officers approached the stolen Chrysler Concord as the chase winded down, Sheffield put the vehicle in reverse and hit the gas pedal.

One officer feared for his partner’s life and shot Sheffield in the shoulder. That officer has been put on paid administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting.
