Cop charged in crash
JACKSONVILLE (AP) – Authorities say a Jacksonville police officer has been charged with culpable negligence and giving a false statement in a January crash that left one man dead.
The Florida Highway Patrol filed the charges, and Marcus Kilpatrick was served with a notice to appear for the two misdemeanors on Monday.
FHP says Kilpatrick’s patrol car was traveling at nearly 100 mph before crashing into 86-year-old Matthew Ogden Jr.’s truck on Jan. 14. Ogden died after being thrown from his vehicle.
Kilpatrick told investigators he had his emergency lights on, but witnesses said he didn’t.
The sheriff’s office has not said whether Kilpatrick will lose his job.
