Cape Canaveral residents evict community peacocks
CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) – Members of a Cape Canaveral community plan to evict a group of several dozen longtime residents: a flock of peacocks.
Ocean Gardens Homeowners Association President Charlie Roichek says the birds have treated gardens like salad bars, made nests in planters and ruined screened enclosures. They also squawk loudly and make a mess with their droppings.
Residents say the peacocks have lived in Cape Canaveral for decades, possibly as early as the 1850s, and some insist they should be allowed to stay. But after a meeting of residents, Roichek says the community plans to capture and relocate many of the birds, possibly to a South Carolina farm.
