House votes to increase Fla. graduation standards
TALLAHASSEE (AP) – High school graduation standards would be tightened under a bill that’s cleared the Florida House.
The measure (HB 1293) passed Thursday on a 75-42 party line vote with Republicans for and Democrats against.
It would increase math and science requirements and the score needed on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, to get a standard diploma.
The sponsor, Rep. Erik Fresen, R-Miami, said his bill would help Florida students better compete with counterparts around the world.
Democrats argued that it would mean more students dropping out, failing to earn standard diplomas and needing remedial classes but no money to pay for them.
It goes to the Senate where a similar bill (SB 2654) is in committee.
