AG: Bogus Chinese drywall products arise

1 min read

TALLAHASSEE (AP) – Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is warning people with homes containing tainted Chinese drywall to beware of scams.

McCollum said Thursday at least two types of fraudulent activity involving the defective drywall have been reported. Fraudsters are marketing supposed test kits, which cost thousands of dollars but are mostly ineffective, and other purported quick fixes.

Cold call inspectors claiming to be experts have also been reported.

Officials say tainted drywall can only be found through visual inspection.

Thousands nationwide are complaining that the material emits horrible smelling fumes that make them sick, corrode copper pipes, blacken jewelry and ruin air conditioners.
