Miami launching ‘smart grid’ energy initiative

1 min read

MIAMI (AP) – Miami is poised to become one of the first cities in the nation to implement a $200 million “smart grid” to promote efficiency and renewable energy.

The city, Florida Power and Light and General Electric are pushing to use federal stimulus money to give Miami-Dade residents so-called “Smart Meters.” The small, wireless devices would allow people to monitor their home or business electricity usage. Miami Mayor Manny Diaz says the new technology will create hundreds of jobs.

If the stimulus money comes, GE will give FPL customers the meters within the next two years.
