Banned chemicals found in oysters

1 min read

JACKSONVILLE (AP) – Federal researchers have discovered a chemical compound in oysters from a St. Johns County waterway.

The discovery of the fire-retardant chemical was found in oysters in the Matanzas River near Crescent Beach. There is no standard for how much of the chemical is safe in oysters.

Recently, federal researchers studied shellfish and sediment samples from shorelines around the country to survey chemical levels nationally.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration study reported a high chemical level in oyster tissue in the Matanzas near the Florida 206 bridge.
