Nine people displaced in home fire
POMPANO BEACH (AP) – Authorities say one man was treated for burns and nine people were displaced after two children started a home fire in Pompano Beach.
The Wednesday morning blaze destroyed the home, along with a car that was in the garage.
Officials say the fire was started by two girls, ages 2 and 4, who were playing with a lighter under their grandfather’s bed.
The grandfather was hospitalized after suffering second-degree burns to his feet and a leg while trying to extinguish the fire. He was later released. No one else was injured.
The American Red Cross will help find the nine displaced people a place to stay.
Authorities say the girls who started the fire will be referred to a Broward County fire-starter program.
