Bill would let students vote for energy fee

TALLAHASSEE (AP) – Florida’s university students may get a chance to decide if they should pay a new “green fee.”

The $1 per credit fee would be used for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects that sponsors say will save money in the long run. The annual cost would be $30 for a typical full-time student.

The Senate Finance and Tax Committee unanimously approved the green fee Monday. The bill (SB 1996) must clear two other Senate committees before getting a floor vote. There’s no similar bill in the House, though.
