Lifeguard tryouts attract older candidates
DAYTONA BEACH (AP) – Typical beach lifeguards are teenagers, but one Florida county got at least a half-dozen grown-ups at a swim tryout.
Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn says anyone who’s not a teen is considered an “older” hire.
Six potential older hires showed up to swim 500 meters freestyle in 11 minutes at a March 14 tryout.
A 33-year-old Orange City landscaper said he wants to be a lifeguard to make a little extra money for his family in this bad economy. His wife is expecting the couple’s third child.
A 59-year-old Ormand Beach security guard and a 21-year-old construction worker both said they came to try out because they’re having trouble finding other work.
About 50 part-time lifeguard positions are open in the county.
