DAYTONA BEACH (AP) – Typical beach lifeguards are teenagers, but one Florida county got at least a half-dozen grown-ups at a swim tryout.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn says anyone who’s not a teen is considered an “older” hire.

A 59-year-old Ormand Beach security guard and a 21-year-old construction worker both said they came to try out because they’re having trouble finding other work.

About 50 part-time lifeguard positions are open in the county.
