Man gets 30 years in murder-for-hire plot
TAMPA (AP) – The owner of a central Florida construction company is going to prison for 30 years for trying to hire a hit man to kill an IRS agent.
Federal prosecutors say Randy Nowak agreed to pay an undercover FBI agent $20,000 to kill agent Christine Brandt. Brandt was auditing Nowak’s business in Polk County, east of Tampa.
The 50-year-old Nowak was sentenced Thursday in federal court. A jury found him guilty in December.
Prosecutors say Nowak was afraid the government would find more than $3 million he stashed in offshore bank accounts. He was arrested in July after going to meet the undercover agent, whom he thought was a hit man, at a restaurant in Lakeland.
