South Florida beaches close as sharks swarm
RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Officials in South Florida say swimmers should stay out of the water at some beaches as sharks make their annual migration south.
Beaches along Singer Island closed Wednesday, as the sharks put on a show for the beachgoers and lifeguards on the shore.
A vacationing New York City firefighter told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel he saw about 30 to 40 sharks in the water over a half-hour period. And a pair of lifeguards on one beach said they saw “a thousand” sharks from their perch on a guard stand.
