Floridians bundle up as cold snap hits state

(AP) – Shelters filled with the homeless and Floridians were reminded to protect their pets and plants as chilly weather set in across state.

Orlando International Airport spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell said the frosty weather delayed about 24 flights Thursday morning. Fennell said air traffic was back to normal by midmorning and called the delays “unusual.”

The cold snap that stretched down the Florida peninsula has also caused problems for farmers.

In Belle Glade, workers used helicopters to protect corn and green beans from the frigid temperatures, and farmers in the Tampa Bay area also kept careful watch. George Casey, who manages a blueberry crop in Brooksville with his wife, told the St. Petersburg Times that he expects to lose about 5 percent of his crop.
