Two mothers on hunger strike for school budget cuts
MIAMI (AP) – Two mothers in Miami-Dade County are protesting budget cuts within the school district by staging a hunger strike.
Bibiana Salmon and Malexys Morales have been on strike since Monday. They say they are fed up by massive budget cuts to the Miami-Dade School District and vow to stay put inside their tents staked outside Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School in a western Miami suburb.
Salmon says she wants school district and state officials to pay attention because “this is the future of our children we’re talking about.” She wants pay raises for teachers and to keep elective courses for students.
School district spokesman John Schuster says the frustration is understandable. He suggests that the mothers go directly to state legislators.
