Residents urged to stay safe in cold

TALLAHASSEE (AP) – State officials are urging Floridians to prepare for the coldest weather of 2009 this week as a series of cold fronts are expected to sweep through the state.

Subfreezing temperatures are expected across much of North Florida over the next few days, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management wants residents to stay safe.

Residents should stay indoors and use safe heating sources. Space heaters and candles should be kept away from curtains and furniture. Charcoal or other fuel-burning devices that produce carbon monoxide should never be used indoors.

Officials also recommend that residents install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of their homes.
