TALLAHASSEE (AP) – Appellate Judge Charles Canady, who as a congressman helped prosecute then-President Bill Clinton at his 1999 impeachment trial, is being sworn in as a justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

Canady is being sworn in Wednesday afternoon. The Lakeland native replaces Justice Raoul Cantero, the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic member.

Canady served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives from November 1984 to November 1990 and four terms in the United States House of Representatives from January 1993 to January 2001.

Canady is Gov. Charlie Crist’s first appointment to the seven-member high court. He already has made a second appointment and will make two more in the next four months.
