MIAMI (AP) _ Authorities say an 8-year-old boy drowned after his mother lost control of her car and drove into a South Miami-Dade canal.

Miami-Dade police say 31-year-old Lisa Hooshing was driving with her three children near Homestead Saturday when she suddenly became ill. As the car rolled toward the canal, Hooshing’s 11-year-old daughter jumped out, but her two sons remained in the vehicle.

Several nearby residents rushed out to try to help the woman and two boys. Hooshing’s 4-year-old son was pulled from the car, but no one could get to the woman or her older son.

Divers with Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue finally pulled them from the water and gave them CPR. They were taken to different hospitals. Police say Hooshing was in critical condition, but her son died.
