Bowlers showcase their abilities, personalities through new league

Bowlers come in all shapes and sizes. Anyone can roll a strike… and have a lot of fun doing so.
For individuals with disabilities, especially adults, bowling offers an opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles, social integration and a little bit of competitive spirit.
“When an individual graduates out of the school system at age 22, there are not many programs, activities and services around,” said Connor Nehls, director of engagement for STARability Foundation. “The bowling league gives them something to be excited about, get on their calendar and be included in something.”
STARability Foundation, which has a mission of transforming the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, focuses on creating an inclusive community that shines light on ability, not disability. The Foundation’s bowling program began 40 years ago with just six participants and has grown to include hundreds of participants over the years.
To date, STARability’s bowling program has been based in Naples, but the opening of 810 Entertainment at Miromar Outlets in Estero gave the foundation a more central location for participants across Collier and Lee counties. On March 10, about 25 participants visited 810 Entertainment to kickstart the league. 810 Entertainment offers 16 bowling lanes in addition to billiards tables, dart lanes, sports simulators, axe throwing, an expansive arcade, restaurant and the popular Mean Mugs Milkshake Bar.
“Bowling is considered a ‘social sport,'” said Joe Beach, general manager of 810 Entertainment, formerly known as 810 Billiards & Bowling. “You don’t have to train nonstop or buy expensive gear… Just show up, grab some shoes and a bowling ball, and have fun with your friends and family.”
Bowling is one of the most popular recreational activities among STARability Foundation participants, who also enjoy baseball, basketball, golf, yoga, tennis, pickleball and soccer programs.
“There are individuals within our community that are just like you and I,” Nehls said. “They want jobs, they want social groups and they just want to be included in everything, regardless of their disability, which is why we shine light on their ability, not disability.”
“Our team enjoyed interacting with STARability participants and their families, and we’re looking forward to their league every Monday,” Beach added. “This is the first league 810 has hosted since opening last summer, and we’re hoping more organizations and youth groups will follow STARability’s lead to provide programs like this for their members.”
