Free pet adoption events to free up shelter space
The Gulf Coast Human Society will hold a free adoption event this weekend while Lee County Domestic Animal Services will take part in a special 15-day adoption event beginning next week.
Gulf Coast Human Society
The Gulf Coast Human Society will hold its fee-waived adoption event from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The goal is to free up kennel space, in case shelters which were in the path of Hurricane Helene need to transfer shelter pets.
“Hurricane Helene has impacted the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend areas, and here at GCHS, we’re bracing for the worst while hoping for the best, as the news of the aftermath starts coming out,” GCHS officials said in a release issued today. “Just like when we welcomed 19 shelter dogs and 2 shelter cats from Live Oaks Animal Services after Hurricane Debbi, we’re preparing to step up once again to support our fellow shelters in need.
“After experiencing the impact of Hurricane Ian ourselves, we know how vital the shelter network is in times of crisis. To make room for more pets in need, we need your help! Every adoption means one more life we can save.
“Join us this weekend and make a difference. Adopt a furry friend and help us prepare for the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and help these shelters in need. “Together, we can save lives!”
Adoption special excludes all puppies (8 weeks through 19 weeks) and kittens (8 weeks through 19 weeks).

More than 390 shelters in 44 states are taking part.
The waived adoption fees include spay or neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations, county license and a 10-day health check. This is a $600 package.
“Volunteers and staff are waiting to introduce your new family member to you,” county officials said in a release issued today. “Just stop by the adoption center 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 5600 Banner Drive in Fort Myers.”
BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event is the largest funded adoption event in the country. This lifesaving event began in 2016 with a goal of encouraging more families to choose adoption. Empty the Shelters is BISSELL Pet Foundation’s largest program, partnering with 742 animal welfare organizations in 49 states and Canada to reduce adoption fees.
