FMFF announces seven films selected for its 13th annual festival

The Fort Myers Film Festival has announced seven official selections that will be screened at its 13th annual festival, to be held May 17-21 at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center and other select venues around Fort Myers. Final notices to filmmakers who have submitted for the 2023 season will be given end of month and announcements will be made.

This year’s crop will include the following:

“Deep Rising” considers the fate of the planet’s last untouched wilderness — the deep ocean — as an organization is about to allow massive extraction of seabed metals to fuel the world’s energy crisis. By Matthieu Rytz; Narrated by Jason Momoa; 93 min; Documentary; 2023.

“Lost Cos” tells the story of a woman haunted by her tortured childhood and the violent loss of the great love of her life, who finds escape in Los Cos — a mysterious underground club where cosplay and burlesque intertwine and heroes and villains blur the line between fantasy and reality. By Robin de Levita; Starring Evgeniya Radilova; 85 min; Feature; 2023.

“Worth the Fight” tells the story of Steve Canton, current president of the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame based in Fort Myers and has spent his entire life devoted to the sport of boxing both as a fighter and now mentor coach. “Worth The Fight” goes beyond the action in the ring and profiles seven unique fighters who, while sharing a love for boxing, also battle unique challenges outside the ring. By John Biffar; 60 min; Documentary; 2023

“Bridge to the Other Side” tells the story of a world that’s falling apart, a grieving widow struggling with her own grief and self-destruction, fights to save young people struggling with a mental health crisis. Embedded with the fire department, she’s battling the men who don’t want her there, the clients who fight her tooth and nail, and her own wounded psyche. She wants to save the world, if the job doesn’t kill her first. By KT Curran; 100 min; Feature; 2023

“Warriors: The Bernie Mac Disease” takes you on a deeply personal journey through the life and legacy of the beloved comedian Bernie Mac through the eyes of his widow, Rhonda, and the impact that sarcoidosis had on his rise to fame. By Nicholas Markart: 27 min; Documentary; 2023.

“Black White and the Greys” tells the story of a marriage put to the test after a couple is forced to quarantine together through the COVID pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement. By Marchelle Thurman, Casey Nelson; 99 min; Feature 2023.

“Other People’s Children” is a story about a childless woman who begins a deep bond with her boyfriend’s young daughter. By Rebecca Zlotowski; 104 min; Feature; 2023.
