Book Discussion: “The Island of Sea Women”

11 a.m., Wednesday, July 6

A mesmerizing, historical novel about friendship and destructive family secrets set on a small island in Korea. Young divers, Mi-ja and Young-sook, will see their friendship pushed to the brink of collapse due to forces beyond their control.

Crafts at Cape: Sea Glass Magnets

11 a.m., Thursday, July 7

Learn how to create nautical magnets. You’ll be able to create a starfish and seahorse using sea glass. Registration is required.

Timothy “Saltwater Cowboy” McBride

Author Presentation

2 p.m., Thursday, July 14

In 1979, Wisconsin native Tim McBride hopped into his Mustang and headed south. He was 21 and his best friend had offered him a job working as a crab fisherman in Chokoloskee Island, a town of fewer than 500 people on Florida’s Gulf Coast. But this wasn’t a typical fishing outfit. McBride had been unwittingly recruited into a band of smugglers, middlemen between a Colombian marijuana cartel and their distributors in Miami.

Crafts at Cape: Christmas in July

Learn how to create different Christmas-themed crafts for Christmas in July. Registration is required.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

All-Abilities Kids Storytime

10 a.m., Saturday, July 2

For ages 3-12 and caregivers. This storytime emphasizes books, music and sensory experiences designed for children with adaptive needs and their families. Using visual schedule boards, stories are told through multiple modalities. This creates a positive storytime experience in a quieter environment with reduced sensory stimuli. Class size is limited to 10 children, plus their parents or caregivers. Space is limited. Arrive early and visit the children’s desk to check in. First come, first served.

Sea Lab

2 p.m., Monday, July 11

Join Sanibel Sea School in their mobile sea lab and gain a better understanding of the creatures that are found in Southwest Florida’s marine environments. Get a chance to use a microscope, learn about marine habitats and help dissect a squid. For ages 6- 11. Registration is required.

Dolphin Discovery

10 a.m., Wednesday, July 13

Join us for stories, music and rhymes about dolphins. For children through age 5 with a caregiver. First come, first served. Space is limited.

Kids Read Down Fines

1-2 p.m., Saturday, July 16

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit on overdue fines for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Please bring your library card. Visit the Youth Services desk to register.

Adam’s Amazing Animals

2 p.m., Monday, July 18

Local wildlife biologist Adam Pottruck is bringing his critters to the library for an interactive show and tell experience you won’t forget. For ages 6-11. Registration is required.

Tropical Fish Adventure

10 a.m., Wednesday, July 20

Join us for stories, music and rhymes about tropical fish. For children through age 5 with a caregiver. First come, first served. Space is limited.

Saturday Summer Storytime

10 a.m., Saturday, July 23

Join us for stories, rhymes, music and movement. For children through age 5 with a caregiver. First come, first served. Space is limited. Please visit the Youth Services desk to pick up a ticket.

Oceanography Down Under

2 p.m., Monday, July 25

Join us for a high-energy, Australia-themed show that combines music, culture, puppetry, comedy, character building, storytelling and audience participation. For ages 6-11. Registration is required.

Swim with Me

10 a.m., Wednesday, July 27

Join us for stories, music and rhymes about swimming. For children through age 5 with a caregiver. First come, first served. Space is limited.

TEEN PROGRAMS

Games Day

2 p.m., Tuesday, July 12

For ages 12-17. Bring a friend or make some new ones by playing a wide variety of board games. There will also be life-sized Oregon Trail and an Angry Birds craft. Registration is required. Please pick up a ticket at the youth services desk.

Project Linus Volunteer Project

2 p.m., Tuesday, July 19

For ages 12-17. Help create no-sew fleece blankets for local children through Project Linus. Participants of this program can earn one service hour for attending. Registration is required. Please pick up a ticket at the youth services desk.

Fishing, 101 with Captain Debbie

2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26

For ages 12-17. Learn about basic equipment, fish identification, tying knots and more during this hands-on workshop for teens. Space is limited. Registration is required. Please pick up a ticket at the youth services desk.
