NFMAA to stage ‘Frozen’

By CHUCK BALLARO - | Mar 21, 2022

Two years ago, the North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts was set to stage its version of the Disney musical “Frozen.”

However, two weeks before the show was to open, the pandemic put a hold everything in its path, including the musical.

Now, on Wednesday and Thursday, March 30 and 31, the school’s current sixth- through eighth graders will finally put on the musical for their fellow students and the paying public.

Kathy Rivadeneira, director of the production, said everyone is excited to be back on stage live after two years of virtual or closed-circuited performances.

“We were supposed to do this two years ago, but we have a whole new cast and we’re bringing back the cast that was supposed to be here and sit them in the front row and enjoy the show they should have been in,” Rivadeneira said.

What makes this cast unique is that many of them have never done a live show before, meaning Rivadeneira has had to start the whole theater program from the beginning, which she finds exciting.

Emma Bambrey, an eighth-grader, will play the role of Elsa, which she calls an amazing opportunity.

“When I was little, I dreamed of being Elsa, which was every child’s dream when growing up, so when the cast came out, I was so excited to play such an iconic character,” said Bambrey, who has appeared in Beauty & The Beast and Les Miserables at Melody Lane.

Isabella Hull will play Anna, Elsa’s sister. She was in Willy Wonka and The Lion King at the school in the past.

“Anna is such a fun and witty character and I feel I can go full out with it and have fun,” Hull said. “It’s been magical. We have so much fun together and I get to learn so much from the amazing people around me.”

Seventh-grader Alvin Cabrera plays Kristoff, and is one of the students who has not performed on stage for a while.

“It’s been a long time since I performed onstage so I didn’t think I would get the role, but I did,” Cabrera said. “Being on stage is going to be amazing. I love how this is all going.”

There also will be some technical aspects to the performance. River Reed will play Olaf the snowman. Reed will have a robotic puppet of Olaf who can move his mouth while talking. Reed can control the head, legs and arms.

Emalyn Rode will play Sven the reindeer, which is also part animatronic, where the mouth, eyes and eyebrows can move. Such a role requires great timing, which is difficult.

It will be a crazy two days for the cast. There will be three shows on Wednesday, with two happening during the school day for the students and the third on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday will have a day performance for other schools and the neighboring churches and communities such as Herons Glen, who cannot make it to the show on closing night, which will be that evening at 6:30 p.m.
