February programs set at Northwest Regional Library

Next month’s roster of activities at Northwest Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

Tabletop Game Time

6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4

Play tabletop games such as Catan, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic and Splendor. New games will be highlighted each month or bring your own games to teach and share. New and experienced players welcome.

English Caf

10:30 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

Knitting Nook

6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11

A casual self-guided group of people who like to knit or crochet, share ideas, techniques and patterns. Attendees should bring their own projects. Basic supplies available for newcomers.

Books & Bagels

10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12

Join us for a morning of books, fun and bagels. Get recommendations from friends, neighbors and librarians on everything from recent releases to forgotten classics. Bagels and coffee will be provided. No registration required.

Artsy Adult Craft: Macram

1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15

Come join us for another Artsy Adult Craft. We will be making a project using the basic knots of macram. Supplies will be provided, so just bring yourself and some creativity. Registration is required.

Algae in Our Waterways

3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18

Cheryl Black, retired environmental science professor at FSW and current education coordinator for the Safe Water Advocacy Coalition group in Cape Coral, will present a program on red tide and blue-green algae. Attendees will learn about the misinformation spreading throughout Southwest Florida during recent outbreaks.

New Movie Matinee

1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19

Each month we’ll enjoy some popcorn and grab one of the hottest newly released DVDs to show. Movie ratings will vary and this program is primarily intended for adult audiences.

Morning Yarn

10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26

Children’s Programs

Super Fun Saturday

10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1

Come play with us at the library. Activities change monthly and vary from dancing, storytelling, art projects and more. Fun for the whole family.

Toddler Tales

10:15 & 11:15 a.m., Mondays, Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24

For ages 18-36 months, this interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited.

Little Authors and Illustrators

4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4

Celebrate famous children’s authors and illustrators in this special event featuring art, writing and the love of books. For children ages 5-11 years. Registration begins Jan. 7. Your reservation is guaranteed only until the start of the program.

Baby Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26

10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 8

For babies up to 18 months. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. Caregivers are encouraged to model proper storytime etiquette by remaining in the room and participating with baby during this program.

Kids Read Down Fines

4:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12

11 a.m. – noon, Saturday, Feb. 15

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials. Please bring your library card.

Preschool Storytime

10:45 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

For ages 3 – 5, children attend this program independently while the caregiver waits nearby. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited.

Kindness Club

4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11

Join us at the library to create kindness in our community. Kids can participate in fun activities designed to encourage kindness and help make the world a better place. Registration begins Jan. 14. For children ages 5-11. Your reservation is guaranteed only until the start of the program.

Tinker Thinkers Club

10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15

Tinker around with different materials and use your imagination for creation. For all ages. No registration required.

STEAM Club: Coding

Through the Woods

5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18

Be ready for fun experiments and projects as we explore the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). For children ages 5-11. Registration begins Jan. 21. Please arrive on time. Your registration is only guaranteed until the start of the program.

Family Storytime

10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22

For children through age 5, your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Family Storytime: Books and Blankets

6:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25

Join us with your blankies for this nighttime edition of storytime. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Happy Leap Day!

10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 29

Just like magic, Feb. 29 arrives and then disappears for four whole years. Celebrate this special day at the library with games, activities and crafts. For all ages. Registration not required.

Teen Programs

TAG

4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5

Be a part of Northwest Regional Library’s new T.A.G. (Teen Advisory Group) and make our Teen Zone the place to be. Help plan and run programs, suggest new books and other materials, create displays and decorate the Teen Zone. For ages 11-18. Service hours and light snacks provided.

Sleepy Saturday Movie Day

Spend the afternoon watching a movie and enjoying light snacks with friends in the Teen Zone. For ages 11-18.

Beat the Clock and Open the Lock

4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12

The librarians locked the door and can’t find the key. It’s up to you to work as a team to find and solve clues, beat the clock and open the lock. For ages 11-18. Light snacks provided.

The Great Oreo Taste-Off

4:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14

Only one Oreo can rule them all. Put your taste buds to the test and let’s decide once and for all which flavor reigns supreme. For teens ages 11-18.

COAL

4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18

Teens do you need service hours? Northwest Regional Library has a solution. COAL (Compassion, Openness, Accept-ance and Learning) is a new program available for teens discussing relevant topics, introducing presenters and of course connecting with the community. Light snacks provided. For teens grades 6-12.
