Five students honored at Do The Right Thing ceremony
The city of Cape Coral’s monthly “Do The Right Thing” ceremony for January was held Wednesday, Jan. 22, in City Council chambers. The guest speaker was Matthew Richter, vice president and chief information officer for Ecological Laboratories. Five Cape Coral students were recognized.
Overall winners:
Jesse Davis
Seventh Grade – Caloosa Middle
Brachelly Morales
Eighth Grade – Caloosa Middle
Recently while riding the school bus, Jesse and Brachelly observed a student in distress. Jesse acted quickly to keep the student safe while Brachelly borrowed another peer’s phone to call 911 for help. Because of Jesse and Brachelly’s quick action, a student’s life was saved.
Yulena Jimenez
Seventh Grade
Mariner Middle
Yulena recently went above and beyond in verifying the welfare of a fellow classmate who was in desperate need of immediate mental health intervention. Worried that her peer may continue to hurt themselves, Yulena reported her concern to the school resource officer. The student was located and provided immediate medical attention and mental health intervention. Without Yulena’s quick action, the outcome of this incident could have been catastrophic.
Also honored:
Luke Deering
Sixth Grade – Caloosa Middle
While volunteering at the Salvation Army pantry, Luke noticed many kids wearing only flip flops. This concerned him because these children and teens walk several miles to the fields; walk to their temporary homes, and to the Salvation Army to get food and basic necessities. Luke organized the “Go Sneakers” drive at Caloosa Middle and also asked parishioners at his place of worship to donate sneakers. Because of Luke’s efforts, he was able to collect 148 pairs of sneakers to donate to the shelter.
Mattingly Webber
Fifth Grade – Pelican Elementary
For Christmas, Mattingly wanted nothing for himself. The only thing he wanted was to feed the homeless. Matting received $200 which he used to purchase and deliver food to those in need. Mattingly was very happy with the results and now wants to set up a website to help feed the homeless.
