Audubon Society to ‘explore’ Prairie Pines Preserve Saturday
The Audubon of Southwest Florida invites the public to an exploration of Prairie Pines Preserve, a Conservation 20/20 site acquired in 2001, this Saturday, Dec. 10, at 8 a.m.
Prairie Pines Preserve, which includes 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails and an ADA-accessible loop trail, is located in North Fort Myers and consists of many diverse native plant communities, including wet and mesic flatwoods, depression marshes, wet prairie and prairie hammock.
Birds and wildlife commonly observed at this preserve include wood storks, red-headed woodpeckers, and marsh rabbits.
Prairie Pines Preserve is also one of the few Conserva-tion 20/20 locations that include a paved parking area and restroom facilities. These amenities, as well as trail markers, interpretive signage, and some exotics treatment were made possible through a grant awarded by the Florida Communities Trust program.
The Preserve located at 18400 North Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), with the main entrance parking area just north of Del Prado Boulevard on the east side of U.S. 41. Parking is free.
Those attending are urged to bring binoculars, sun protection, a bottle of drinking water, and insect repellent. Restrooms are available.
Audubon members and non-members, beginner to advanced birders are welcome. This is a free event; however, any donations will be appreciated.
