Tuesday, March 8, was International Women’s Day. The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom celebrated the day March 11 by taking over the usual Friday night Shabbat Service. Rabbi Devora Buchen chanted this week’s reading of a portion of the Torah, and a dozen members of Sisterhood participated in the service. The ladies of the choir led the congregation in song. The Kabbalat Service, which is a song-filled festive celebration of the Sabbath, was followed by the Oneg Shabbat, a coffee and dessert klatch. Here the Rabbi reads from the holy scrolls of the Torah, while Elyse receives an honor by blessing the Torah, and Sharon Rosenberg holds the gabba, a pointer, and acts as “the” gabba also, in helping the Rabbi to hold her place.
