Gospel Music Concert March 12 at Pine Island United Methodist Church

The Music Department of Pine Island United Methodist Church will present a concert of Gospel and Early American church music Sunday, March 13, at 3 p.m.. in the Sanctuary of PIUMC.

The concert is free.

All the music ensembles of PIUMC are involved: Praise Team, Children’s Choir, Chancel Chimes (handbell choir), and Chancel Choir.

The Chancel Choir is joined by members of the community and singers from other Pine Island churches: Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and Fishers of Men Lutheran Church.

Janet Nieburg, Coordinator of Music Ministries at PIUMC, will conduct most of the program.

Sheli Thompson-Gauthier is the leader of the Praise Team.

Beverly Brewer and Marge Adkins will accompany at the piano and organ.

Gerry Mahan, organist at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, will open the program with a piano medley call A Gospel Homecoming.

Spirituals, Shaker songs and shape-note songs will be part of the program, along with old-time songs from the performance repertoire of The Carter Family and The Stanley Brothers.

A string band made up of church members who play guitar, mountain dulcimer, autoharp, and bass will accompany several of the songs.

The audience will be able to sing along on some of the songs!
