Next month’s roster of activities at Northwest Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

Exhibit: Florida Before

Statehood, Feb. 1 – 29

Available during normal library operating hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.;

Tuesday: Noon to 8 p.m.; Friday, Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Explore Florida’s rich history, cultural diversity and development in this traveling exhibit from The History Museum of Florida.

Coloring for Adults

6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9

The repetitive motion involved in coloring has a calming effect and adults have found this childhood activity a refreshing way to release their creativity, relieve stress and meet other participants. Materials provided.

Florida Long-Term Care

Ombudsman Program

3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10

Discover how the Ombudsman Program advocates on behalf of adults/seniors in a variety of long-term care facilities to defend their rights and well-being.

The History of Magic

2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13

Dr. Tony Noice, author, professor of theatre at Elmhurst College and former professional magician, combines equal amounts of information and entertainment. You’ll see cave paintings depicting the first magic trick ever invented, unravel the secrets of the early Egyptian conjurors, and watch the development of the mystery arts from the earliest feats recorded on papyrus to the illusions of current TV stars. Registration is required.

Book Discussion: “Being Mortal”

2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17

In “Being Mortal,” bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine cannot only improve life but also the process of its ending.

Storytime

Toddler Tales

10:15 a.m., Mondays, Feb. 1, 8, 15

This interactive and active time for toddlers and their favorite caregiver is designed to advance pre-reading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Baby Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 3, 10, 17

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

Preschool Storytime

11 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18

Children attend this program independently while the caregiver waits nearby. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

Family Storytime

10 a.m., Saturdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20

The whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Children’s Programs

Kids Read Down Fines

10 a.m. – noon Saturdays, Feb. 6, 20

5-7 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 9, 23

Children and teens earn a $2 coupon or credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under and applies only to overdue charges.

Little Racers

10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24

Children ages 2-5 listen to a short story and then off they go racing through our little library town with cars, trucks and anything that zooms. Bring your own toy vehicles or use ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the Northwest Regional Library. Registration is required.

Teen Programs

On the Table: Valentine’s Day Lei,

Feb. 1- 6

Available during normal library

operating hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.;

Tuesday: Noon to 8 p.m.; Friday, Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Simple, cute and fun red leis. They are only minutes to create and guaranteed to make that special someone smile. Supplies are located in the Art Nook.

Take a black smooth stone, a bit of red paint and create a paperweight. Supplies provided by the Northwest Regional Library Friends of the Library.

Game’n

4 p.m. Middle School

A venue for all types of games: board, card or electronic. Light snacks provided by the Friends of the Northwest Regional Library.
