Cape Public Library announces programs, activities to start year

Next month’s roster of activities at Cape Coral Lee County Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Programs

Craft Corner: Knitting and Crocheting

3 p.m., Mondays, Jan. 4, 11, 25

3 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and patterns. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library.

Chess Anyone?

5:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26

Rise to the chess challenge and join in the fun. Bring a personal chess set, if desired. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library.

Hatha Yoga

9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6

Yoga Instructor Carol Ellis will conduct a Hatha Yoga class. Participants should bring a towel or yoga mat. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. Registration is required.

Roc Day Celebration and Fiber Art Exhibit

11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9

The Weavers of Char-Lee will provide hands-on weaving and spinning demonstrations and projects. Visitors are invited to bring a loom, spinning wheel or fiber art project to work on, or are welcome to try a loom, spinning wheel or drop spindle. Registration is required.

Cars & Rock n’ Roll of the 1950s

11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 9

Steve Valdespino will present a rollicking review of the cars and music of the 1950s. Sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Library. Registration is required.

Recognizing and Understanding

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11

This class will provide help to recognize the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Discussion will also include choosing a health care agent, making decisions about medical treatments and comfort level and more. Registration is required.

How Ten Billion People Can Thrive

on a Fragile Planet

1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13

Tom Blees, author of “Prescription for the Planet,” will describe the means by which climate change, water shortages and wars over resources can be avoided by employing cutting-edge technologies and enlightened public policy. Registration is required.

Book Talk: “Redeployment”

by Phil Klay

2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13

A collection of short stories by a former Marine captain and Iraq veteran focusing on the complexities of life for soldiers on the front lines and after, exploring themes ranging from brutality and faith to guilt and survival.

Tai Chi/Qi Gong

11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 14

A low impact, stress reducing exercise for all fitness levels. Sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Public Library. Registration is required.

Tales of Two Countries

1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 16

Hear excerpts from Plein-air poet Karla Linn Merrifield’s new book “Bunchberries, More Poems of Canada,” along with selections from her works “Dawn of Migration and Other Audubon Dreams” and “Lithic Scatter and Other Poems.” Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library. Ben Franklin: Bigger than His Legend

3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23

Meet Benjamin Franklin and learn about his greatest scientific achievements and many of his other accomplishments. The program concludes with the re-enactment of a scientific experiment Ben actually performed. Sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Public Library. Registration is required.

Weaving Workshop:

Ragtime Designs Weaving

Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories. First come, first served.

Preschool Storytime

11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, 19, 26

Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other children, books and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun! First come, first served.

Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m., Thursdays, Jan. 14, 21, 28

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. First come, first served.

Toddler Tales

11 a.m., Wednesdays, Jan. 13, 20, 27

Toddlers love activity and the chance to practice their growing language skills. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their favorite caregiver is designed to advance pre-reading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books. First come, first served.

Children and teens earn a $2 coupon or credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials.

Movie Night

5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20

The “Despicable Me” supporting characters get their very own spin-off. Rated PG. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. First come, first served. Subject to change without notice.

Mad Science: Fire and Ice!

2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22

Get ready for some sizzling excitement! Witness and learn about the amazing properties of fire. Then, cool off with spectacular demonstrations involving dry ice. Check out the “Big Burp,” the “Screwdriver Sizzle” and the famous “Mad Science Shower” as we explore the science behind this amazing frozen gas. Star Wars Craft

2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 25

Make a Star Wars craft to celebrate the new movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” All supplies provided by the library. Please register online or pick up a ticket at the Youth Services Desk.
