DAV Chapter 108 holds Memorial Day service
On Monday, May 25, after attending other memorial services in the community honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice, members of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 108 of Cape Coral gathered graveside to conduct their annual memorial honoring the chapter’s namesake, Cpl. James Doil Rader.
The solemn service began with an a cappella rendering of “The Star Spangled Banner,” sung by Dallas Bel representing Touch A Hero’s Heart.
The memorial was led by the Chapter Judge Advocate John Camp who paid homage to our fallen comrade, recognizing the contributions he made to the legacy of liberty and freedom and acknowledging the loss to his family and friends.
Jr. Vice Commander Frank Greulich and Assistant Treasurer Robert Taylor joined in a three-round rifle salute and the service ended in prayer followed by the playing of “taps” by chapter bugler Harvey Charter.
Cpl. Rader was six months into his second tour of Vietnam when, on Dec. 6, 1967, at Quang Tri Province, he was fatally struck. He was assigned to C CO, 1ST BN, 4TH MARINES, 3RD MARDIV, III MAF.
He is buried alongside his parents at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens.
