Next month’s roster of activities at Cape Coral Lee County Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

English Cafe

10 a.m., Fridays, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

Operation Lifesaver

10 a.m., Saturday, May 2

Richard Smith from the Seminole Police Department will present Operation Lifesaver, a national public awareness campaign working to change people’s behavior around railroad tracks and crossings. Registration is requested.

Craft Corner: Knitting and Crocheting

3:30 p.m., Mondays, May 4, 11, 18

3:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 26

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and patterns. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library.

Chess Anyone?

5:30 p.m., Tuesdays, May 5, 12, 19, 26

Rise to the chess challenge and join in the fun. Bring a personal chess set, if desired. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library.

Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

10 a.m., Friday, May 8

Sally Stein, Director of Public Programs for Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, will present an overview highlighting the ancient cypress forest at the Sanctuary and National Audubon’s land management, restoration, science and educational work. Registration is required.

Book Discussion: “The Art of Racing

in the Rain by Garth Stein”

Nearing the end of his life, Enzo, a dog with a philosopher’s soul, tries to bring together the family, pulled apart by a three-year custody battle between daughter Zoe’s maternal grandparents and her father Denny, a race car driver.

Southwest Florida Military Museum

10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16

Librarian and historian Sonya Raymond from the Southwest Florida Military Museum and Library will discuss the history of the museum and the memorabilia on display. Historian Jim Zybeck will conduct tours of the traveling museum bus. Registration is required.

Hatha Yoga

9:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 20

Yoga Instructor David Anderson will conduct a Hatha Yoga class for all ages. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library. Registration is required.

The Value of Native Plants in Your Landscape

1 p.m., Wednesday, May 20

Master gardener Donna Cressman will discuss how to use plants that are well adapted to the Florida climate to reduce the need for fertilizer, water and excessive care. Registration is required.

Senior Driver – Safe Mobility

9:30 a.m., Friday, May 22

Crime Prevention Specialist Michelle Sargis will present the “Senior Driver – Safe Mobility” program stressing ways to keep safe while navigating Florida roadways. Registration is required.

Books and Banter

9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26

Join other book lovers and come prepared to talk about a favorite book that you’ve read recently. Relax with coffee and refreshments. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Public Library.

Storytime

Family Storytime

This program is for the whole family and it lasts about 30 minutes. First come, first served.

Preschool Storytime

11 a.m., Tuesday, May 5

11 a.m., Wednesday, May 6

Preschoolers attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes. First come, first served.

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10 a.m., Thursday, May 7

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce early literacy, rhyming and movement to infants. First come, first served.

Toddler Storytime

11 a.m., Thursday, May 7

Two year olds with their caregivers, participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts about 30 minutes. First come, first served.
