Cape Historical Society meeting to feature archaeology presentation on ‘how humans have shaped’ the Southwest Florida landscape

1 min read

The regular monthly meeting for the Cape Coral Historical Society will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday April 14, at Cultural Park Theatre, 528 Cultural Park Boulevard, Cape Coral.

Melissa Timo, public archaeology coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network, will be the guest speaker for the meeting. Her presentation is titled “The Tamiami and Other Projects of Profound and Unintended Consequences: The Archaeology of How Humans Have Shaped the Southwest Florida Landscape.”

South Florida has had a reputation for being a difficult place to traverse. When the Tamiami Trail completed in 1928, it was hailed as a great feat of engineering and fully opened Southwest Florida for development. Its construction, however, fundamentally changed the south Florida landscape.

This was not the first or the last time human civic projects have left their mark. From the Calusa onwards, humans have ensured that wild Florida isn’t so wild after all.
