April in Cape Coral: It doesn’t get any better than the Friends’ book sale

5 min read

You’ve no doubt heard about the wonderful book sales at the Cape Coral Library. Well, this is your chance to find that special author or book – and at a price you’ll love. April is the month when one of the major fundraisers for the Friends of the Cape Coral Library takes place, with overflowing tables of books on every imaginable subject:

– Thursday, April 23, from 35:30 p.m.: a Members’ Only sale begins this popular event.(Non-members can sign up at the door for a nominal membership fee.)

– Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the public is invited. Hundreds of books by your favorite authors as well as those on your particular subject of interest will be on hand – whether it’s gardening, history, military or self-help or a number of other subjects, you’ll find it at the Friends’ sale.

– Saturday, April 25, the sale continues at 9 a.m. and concludes 3 p.m.

These books sales and other fundraising events provide programs at the Cape Coral Library, programs for children, teens and adults. One important upcoming programs this April is:

– Saturday, April 4, at 10 a.m.: Living with the Burrowing Owls of Cape Coral. This program will give information on the habits, habitats and predators of the fascinating burrowing owls, with tips on how to preserve the official bird of Cape Coral.

– Monday, April 6, at 2 p.m. is a time for the kids to come out to see Trouper, the blind raccoon. (Parents will love this, too.) If you haven’t seen the antics of Trouper, the rescued raccoon, you’re in for a treat as Miss Dot, his rescuer, describes her life with Trouper, his history and the importance of preserving these precious animals along other challenged wildlife.

And, for the kids: Don’t forget the Tenth Annual Coloring the Earth Contest open to children across Lee County. This year’s theme, “Bald Eagles in Southwest Florida and ways to protect them” can be researched through several websites and by visiting the webpage, www.capecoral.net/department/community_development/environmental/bald_eagle_information.php#.VCy8ezD-M8. Create your own drawing/painting and enter. Wildlife biologist Dr. Jerry Jackson, professor emeritus at FGCU and producer and host of the NPR show, “With the Wild Things,” will be the keynote speaker at this May 6 presentation at the Cape Coral Library. Library Art Gallery

Portraits as well as other artwork by the various artists who participated in the Open Portrait Sessions with a Model offered through the Cape Coral Art League will be exhibited in the library gallery April 1 through May 13.

Held Tuesday mornings at the Art League from January through April, the sessions provide a costumed model who poses for artists who wish to participate – for a nominal fee. There is no instructor, artists work in whatever medium they wish and everyone brings their own materials.

For more information on the open portrait sessions, e-mail facilitator Marianne Bell at rbmb2@comcast.net.
