Father, two sons inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution

William B Spearman and sons William Robert Spearman and Matthew Louis Spearman were inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The induction was held at noon at the Royal Palm Yacht club. William and Matthew Spearman are students at Evangelical Christian School attending the sixth and fifth grades. Currently, both young men are studying the American Revolution and are honored to be directly descended from a soldier who fought for the freedom of our country.

Dean’s lists

Cadet Rickey Leon Anderson Jr. of Cape Coral achieved Dean’s List status at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, for the fall semester of the 2010-2011 academic year. Anderson is seeking a BS in Business Administration.

The following students from Florida Institute of Technology were named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester, which ended in December. They are:

Joshua Hinkle, of Cape Coral – Civil Engineering major.

Adam Melendez, of Cape Cora – Forensic Psychology major.

Alan Norori, of Cape Cora – Aviation Management, Flight major.

To be included on the Dean’s List, a student must complete 12 or more graded credits in a semester with a semester grade point average of at least 3.4.

High Honors

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point honored more than 2,365 undergraduate students for attaining high grade point averages during the fall semester of the 2010-11 academic semester. Among those honored is Kevin M Hansen, High Honors from Cape Coral.

Honor Roll

Washington’s State University’s President’s Honor Roll included Anthony Joel Darling from Cape Coral.

Homeschool program

The homeschool program, Archery, will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, from 2-4 p.m. Age requirements and price varies for each home school program. A parking fee is required. Dancing Classrooms

The fourth annual Dancing Classrooms program in Lee County Public Schools will include seven schools and 580 students in 2011, the greatest number of students since its inception in 2008.

The fifth grade students are learning ballroom dancing as part of this exciting 10-week social development program. The concept uses ballroom dancing to build social awareness, confidence and self-esteem through the practice of social dancing.

The participating schools are Spring Creek Elementary, Bonita Springs Elementary, J. Colin English Elementary, Lehigh Elementary, Edgewood Academy, Tice Elementary and Colonial Elementary school.

Dancing exhibitions by schools will take place at Miromar Outlets in Estero on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The final ballroom dancing competition called “Colors of the Rainbow Team Match” will be held on April 2 at the Miromar Design Center.

A total of 84 children will compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in this gala presentation. Sponsorship packages are currently available to support Dancing Classrooms.

Annual Student Essay Contest

The Community College Baccalaureate Association announce that its eighth annual Student Essay Contest is underway. This is a nationwide contest that is being managed locally again this year by Sue Huff of E. Sue Huff and Associates, Inc.

The winner of the essay contest will receive $1,500, which is an increase from the $1,000 of past years. The winner also will receive an all expense paid trip to the 11th Annual Community College Baccalaureate Association

Conference being held in San Diego, California from Feb. 25-27, 2011. The winners’ college will also receive a $500 award in honor of the winning student. The scholarship prize is provided again this year by Community

Environmental Studies scholarship

The Tarpon Bay Explorers Scholarship for Environmental Studies will, for the sixth consecutive year , award $1,000 to local high school seniors or college students in April, reports Doris Hardy, chair of the ‘Ding’ Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge Education Committee.

Applicants must live in Lee County, Charlotte, or Collier County and intend to pursue an education in science, biology, environmental studies, or wildlife conservation. Funds may be used for tuition, books, supplies, equipment, and technical materials at a qualifying institution of higher learning. Applications are due by March 31, 2011.

“Ding” Darling Wildlife Society will administer the Tarpon Bay Explorers scholarships, and in the past has matched funds when qualified candidates exceeded TBE scholarship availability.

Laboratory Theater of Florida Labs

Rats program

The Laboratory Theater of Florida presents its brand new 2011 Children’s Program: Lab Rats….at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers.

Saturdays – Feb. 26, March 19, April 16. and May 21, 9 a.m. A show will be performed, followed by a fun activity. Children will gain insight into puppetry, improvisation, story dramatization, music, comedy, and pantomime to help develop creativity, problem solving, cooperation and thinking skills, as well as a sense of confidence.

Lee Education & Employment Training begins in April

Lee County residents currently working at low-skill, low-paying jobs who have not had an opportunity for higher education or previous job training may take advantage of cost-free job training in Medical Front Office skills to increase their pay.

The seven-month no-cost job-training program starts April 19, and class will graduate in November 2011. Telephone interviews will be accepted through April 15. The class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis and fills up quickly. All applicants must be working, must provide proof of earned income, proof of high school diploma or GED, pass a basic assessment in reading, language and spelling, and pass a criminal background check. Successful applicants must have reliable transportation to the classes which are held 6:30-9:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday nights at High Tech Center Central, 3800 Michigan Avenue, Fort Myers. The L.E.E. Program covers all costs for tuition, books and can cover childcare cost during class hours.
