‘Brainy’ Memory Spas at LMHS

Spas typically cater to fitness, weight loss, and beauty but starting this month Lee Memorial Health System (LMHS) will offer a new twist on wellness called the Memory Spa. It’s part of their Healthy Brain Initiative program to keep the brain active and healthy in older adults.

The Healthy Brain Initiative has helped over 1,000 Southwest Florida residents forget about having too many “senior moments.”

Sue Maxwell, MSW, Director of Older Adult Services for LMHS, said the Memory Spa is based on a successful pilot program offered last year.

The program debuted at the LMHS Wellness Center in Cape Coral in November. LMHS Fort Myers Wellness Center plans to add a course in December. The cost to complete those programs privately exceeds $2,500, but the three-month Memory Spa course is only $90 for Wellness Center members and $150 for non-members. Class sizes range from 10 to 20. Most participants are in their 70s.

For more information about the Healthy Brain Initiative call 772-6765.

Adopt a Publix Store

The Harry Chapin Food Bank needs volunteers to “Adopt a Publix Store” for the Holiday Season. This is a very important food drive that will restock the shelves at this very busy time of year. Area Publix stores prepare bags of groceries available for the public to purchase, the bags are deposited in bins at the local stores and then picked up by volunteers and delivered to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Volunteers need to be available to go to their assigned store on an as needed basis from the end of October through mid-January to pick up the bags. A van or pick-up is preferable for transporting the bags. Stores are located in Fort Myers. North Fort Myers, East Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Estero, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers Beach and Lehigh Acres. Please be our partner and help provide food to the needy of Southwest Florida.

For more details and information contact Marta Hodson at the Harry Chapin Food Bank at 334-7007 ext 32 or at martahodson@harrychapinfoodbank.org.

Our Mother’s Home announces new transitional housing

Teenage foster mothers over the age of 18 and their children will now have shared-suite housing in a recently purchased duplex as part of a new initiative, Journeys, aimed at providing a critical transition between foster care and independence.

Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida is a not for profit organization providing loving care, since 2000, to young teenage women and their children in a group foster care setting. The home renders psychosocial, educational and health care services to the residents.

By law, these young mothers who reach the age of 18 must leave the foster care system. The transition program, Journeys, offers a nurturing environment for those not ready for complete independence. Shared-suite housing with low rent and utilities payments are provided while the program focuses on completion of education and training, job searches, financial planning, child care and real-world problem solving.

The duplex is located on property adjacent to the existing residential facility in San Carlos Park. The building is in need of some repair including new flooring, paint, new appliances and landscaping. For information on assisting with this effort, contact Jim Kurtz at 267-4663 or talljim1@comcast.net.
