Adventure Camp

The Yacht Club School Days Off Adventure Camp for ages 7 to 12 will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7:30 to 5 p.m. The cost is $25 for residents and $37 for all others. Receive a $25 discount for the second child enrolled.

Rotary Park programs

School’s out nature camp for 8 to 14 years is a day packed full of hands-on learning, fun, and adventure as kids explore our nature park and learn about plants, bugs and creatures that can be found at Rotary Park and throughout Cape Coral. The camp is Friday, Oct. 30, from 8 to 4 p.m. The cost is $30 for Cape Residents and $45 for all others.

Local karate students advance in rank

Ten students at Cape Coral’s Martial Arts Training Institute recently passed rank tests to advance in belt rank.

Gulf Middle School

Gulf Middle School will hold its fifteenth annual observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 10, beginning at 10 a.m. in the front of the school. This year’s celebration is to honor of all veterans’ and POW and MIAs.

The observance of Veterans Day is one of the largest and extensive programs within the Lee County School District with major student involvement. Student Government and Civil Air Patrol will serve as hosts for the day. The school’s band will be performing patriotic selections for our guests and student body. Additionally, there will be student readings and speeches by invited guests. An honor table for POWs and MIA will be prominently displayed. Finally, there will be a salute firing squad and will conclude with Taps.

The public is invited to attend.

Little Karate Kids at Four Freedoms Park

Little Karate Kids, for ages 3 to 5, is every Wednesday from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at Four Freedoms Park at 4818 Tarpon Court. The cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

This traditional Japanese Karate-Do program teaches concentration, coordination and self-discipline all in a format that makes learning fun. The uniform not included but can be purchased from instructor. There is no class on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.

Sounds of Florida Chorus

We sing a variety of music in four-parts. Tapes are provided to help learn each part. The chorus meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the chorus room of the Cape Coral Methodist Church, 4116 Coronado Blvd., across from the bocci ball court. Cape Coral Arts Studio fall classes

Fall Class session continues through Nov. 14.

Youth classes include: Drawing Essentials, Cartooning, and Draw/Paint.

Martial Arts Schools

Martial Arts Training Institute, at 1490 N.E. Pine island Road, is a state registered non-profit organization offering martial arts training for youth and adults, has set its 2009-1010 school year day camp schedule. The next starting dates are Thursday, Oct. 29, Wednesday, Nov. 11, Wednesday Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 27.

Martial Arts Training Institute offers free women’s self-defense course. The class meets on Sundays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the MATI location at1490 N.E. Pine Island Road, 78/C, across from Mel’s Diner.

Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Cape Coral Library will hold a gigantic book sale in the meeting room at the Cape Coral Library at 921 SW 39th Terrace, off Mohawk Boulevard. The sale features thousands of books, including novels, paperbacks, literature, history, performing arts, computer books, children?s books, cookbooks, gardening and craft books. There will be books available in German and Spanish as well as video tapes and DVDs.

A special preview of the book sale will be held for members only on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friends memberships will be available at the door. Books will be on sale to the public on Friday, Nov. 6, from 10 to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 to 3 p.m. Most items will be priced at $1 or $2. All proceeds benefit the Cape Coral Library.

Fort Myers

Headstart program awarded grant

The Lee County Public Schools Head Start Program was recently awarded a Head Start National lCenter for Physical Development and Outdoor Play grant to enhance the outdoor play space of the Early Childhood Center. This center serves children through age five.

High school artist competition

ArtFest Fort Myers, Southwest Florida’s premier juried fine art festival, announces a Call for Artists for the high school art competition and exhibit, Art Under 20. This special feature is located in the heart of ArtFest Fort Myers on the weekend of Feb. 6 and 7, 2010. A large gallery tent provides the opportunity for participating students to exhibit their artwork, in a professional setting, to 55,000 ArtFest Fort Myers patrons. Cash prizes totaling $6,000 will be awarded to student competition winners.

Calusa Nature Center, Planetarium

The 11th annual Florida Weekly Friendly Forest. Trick-or-Treat will be held Oct. 24, 25, and 31 from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Nature Center. Admission is $9 for adults and $6 for children ages 3 to 12 p.m. members are half-price admission to this event. Volunteers needed for this event. Hickey’s Creek Home School
