Relay for Life

Saturday is the Columbus Day Parade. The Cape Coral Relay for Life is looking for walkers to march in the parade. To participate, e-mail Donna Germain at donna@capecoralchamber.com. Walkers will meet at 1 p.m. at Tim Collier State Farm, 1315 S.E. 47th St.

Healthy Brain Memory Program

New mammography machine for offices

Physicians Primary Care of Southwest Florida, which has three offices in Cape Coral, now has the new Selenia digital mammography system – a state-of-the-art machine to help doctors in the diagnosis of breast cancer. It is faster than the old technology and allows the radiologist to see images more clearly. One machine is located in the office at 1304 S.E. Eighth Terrace.

Flu, pneumonia shots

The Visiting Nurses Association will offer flu and pneumonia shots to people 65 and older or those with chronic health problems from 1-4 p.m. Friday at Lake Kennedy Senior Center, 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. Shots will not be given to people with egg allergies, anyone who has had Guilian-Barre syndrome, women who are pregnant or anyone who is ill or has a fever. Cost is $30 for the flu shot and $45 for the pneumonia shot. Bring Medicare card to bill Medicare. Medicare HMO or Advantage Plan individuals must pay and a receipt will be given for reimbursement. Movin’ On

Movin’ On, a one-hour class of gentle exercises and movement for breast cancer survivors, will be held Saturdays, Saturday-Nov. 14. Cape Coral Kidney Thrift Store

The Cape Coral Kidney Thrift Store is located at 4836 Candia St. It is a little known treasure chest of donated items from the community. All of the proceeds go to the Kidney Foundation and dialysis patients in the Cape. It offers clothing, household items, home decor and more. Donations are tax deductible. American Cancer Society volunteers

The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers. Opportunities include committee members for Relay for Life to help organize teams, recruit members and more. The ACS is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Project for Make a Difference Day

For a Make a Difference Day project, RSVP of Lee County and the Senior Friendship Centers will collect unused personal care items to be given to individuals in need in the community, including local seniors on fixed incomes, the homeless and impoverished. Personal care kits will be prepared for distribution. Anyone who has trial-sized items of shampoo, soap, conditioner, toothpaste and such are asked to donate to the cause. A group of volunteers will assemble bags for distribution. Anyone interested in donating items or assisting with the project can call Margaret at 275-1881, ext. 203.

Baby Boot Camp

Baby Boot Camp, a program for balancing the fitness needs of new moms with their desire to spend time with their baby or toddler, as well as meeting some of the same needs of her family, will hold classes at 9:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers. The 55-minute sessions are designed for all fitness levels, including prenatal women, and combine strength-training exercises with cardiovascular drills. Cost ranges from $3-$15 per session. Reading for All

Power wheelchairs

Medicare’s regulations now make it easier for seniors and others with debilitating conditions such as arthritis, stroke, heart and breathing problems, or diabetes, to obtain a power wheelchair at little or no cost. Miracle on Wheels is trying to increase public awareness about the assistance options that allow seniors and the disabled to remain independent in their own homes rather than undergo difficult surgery or other expensive treatment or resort to moving into a nursing home. These assistance options are available to anyone with problems getting around their home, or who are in danger of falling due to the medical condition.
