Cape Coral
Haunted Hike
Mike Greenwell’s presents, Haunted Hike on Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 and 28 through 31. The cost is $10.
There will be a Safe Trick or Treat on Friday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. Dress in costume and bring a goodie bag. This is a fee event for kids 12 and under. A donation of pet food and supplies will be accepted for LCHS and ARC.

Little Karate Kids at Four Freedoms Park
Little Karate Kids, for ages 3 to 5, is every Wednesday from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at Four Freedoms Park at 4818 Tarpon Court. The cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

This traditional Japanese Karate-Do program teaches concentration, coordination and self-discipline all in a format that makes learning fun. The uniform not included but can be purchased from instructor. There is no class on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
Sounds of Florida Chorus
We sing a variety of music in four-parts. Tapes are provided to help learn each part. The chorus meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the chorus room of the Cape Coral Methodist Church, 4116 Coronado Blvd., across from the bocci ball court. Cape Coral Arts Studio fall classes
Fall Class session continues through Nov. 14.

Fall Mini Classes will start Nov. 16 through Dec. 19. Register early for classes in the fine arts and fine crafts for adults and youth classes.
Popular adult classes include: beginning clay, watercolor and oil/acrylic painting, glass beadmaking, PMC, wire wrapped jewelry, silversmithing, glass fusing, beaded jewelry design, gemstone polishing, digital and abstract photography.
Supplies for all classes can be purchased in the Arts Studio Supply store.
Youth classes include: Drawing Essentials, Cartooning, and Draw/Paint.

Martial Arts Schools
Martial Arts Training Institute, at 1490 N.E. Pine island Road, is a state registered non-profit organization offering martial arts training for youth and adults, has set its 2009-1010 school year day camp schedule. The next starting dates are Thursday, Oct. 29, Wednesday, Nov. 11, Wednesday Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 27.
Martial Arts Training Institute offers free women’s self-defense course. The class meets on Sundays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the MATI location at1490 N.E. Pine Island Road, 78/C, across from Mel’s Diner.

Mariner Middle School’s band wins state award
Mariner Middle School’s band has been awarded the Innovative Project Award by the Florida Music Educator’s Association (FMEA). This award recognizes the Mariner Middle band program for incorporating music into the classroom. Last year’s eighth grade students read a novel and band students composed a musical piece that reflected the tone of the novel.
Mariner Middle will receive their award at the Florida Music Educator’s Association’s annual conference in Tampa.
Mariner Middle teachers that led the project include band director Tommy Ferlazzo and language arts teachers Darcy Jackson and Pam Harmon.
Mariner Middle School is located in Cape Coral. The school’s mission is to provide students with a well-rounded education with principles that work inside the classroom and out in the community. Mariner Middle School is located at 425 Chiquita Boulevard and the school’s number is 772-1848.
Fort Myers
Alliance for the Arts After School Program
The Alliance for the Arts has created an After School Arts Program for students seeking supplementary instruction in visual and performing arts classes. The After School Arts program is offered for students in grades 1 through 8 and coordinates with the school year calendar running through Dec. 18.
Bus routes will stop at the Alliance for the Arts, on the corner of Colonial and McGregor and pick-up time will be 6 p.m. for parents.
Students who do not attend public school are invited to attend as well.

Calusa Nature Center, Planetarium
Daily programs include guided walks on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m., solar observing on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and snake feeding on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
Manatee encounters, a planetarium multi-media show, is held Monday through Thursday at 11:50 a.m. and insect explorations are every Friday at noon
Dog Day Sunday is the first Sunday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per dog for non members and $2 per dog for members. People with their dogs are free.
The Haunted Walk is Oct. 21 through Oct. 31from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for non-member adults, $6 for non-member children 12 and under, $5 for member adults and $3 for member children 12 and under. Celebrate National Magician Week with The Shell Museum
Abra-kid-abra! The Under the Sea magic show is coming to The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. Is there a Pelican, ‘Gator,’ or horse conch in the house to help our guest magician perform his magic tricks? Young audience participants will be rewarded for their helping hands.
