Cape Coral

KiddieHawk Preschool

An integral part of the Early Childhood Education course at Cape Coral High School, is the KiddieHawk Preschool Program. This program is operated by second-year students interested in pursuing careers related to young children.

Any parent interested in enrolling their 3 to 5 year-old-child in the program should contact Brenda Bardelang at 574-6766, ext. 361.

The program begins the second week of November and operates until June, Tuesday through Friday from 8:15 to10:15 a.m. Weekly fees are $16 and space is limited.

School’s Out Nature Camp

School’s Out Nature Camp, for ages 8-14, is Friday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A day packed full of hands-on learning, fun and adventure as kids explore the nature park and learn about plants, bugs and creatures found at Rotary Park and Cape Coral. The cost is $30 for Cape residents and $45 for non-Cape residents.

Yacht Club school days off

The Yacht Club School Days Off Adventure Camp, for ages 8 to 12, will offer kayaking, tennis, fishing, swimming, beach tennis and more. Adventure Camp will be held on Friday, Sept. 25 and Monday, Sept. 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The resident fee is $25 and the non-resident fee is $30. Preregistration is required. Little Karate Kids at Four Freedoms Park

Little Karate Kids, for ages 3 to 5, is every Wednesday from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at Four Freedoms Park at 4818 Tarpon Court. The cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

This traditional Japanese Karate-Do program teaches concentration, coordination and self-discipline all in a format that makes learning fun. The uniform not included but can be purchased from instructor. There is no class on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.

School days off Adventure Camp

The Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting School Days Off Adventure Camp, for youngsters 8 to 12, at the Yacht Club Community Park on Friday, Sept. 25, and Monday, Sept. 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The adventure camp fun will include tennis, fishing, swimming, soccer and more.

The cost is $25 for residents, $37 for non-residents and the second child saves $5 on the cost.

Martial Arts Schools

Martial Arts Training Institute, a state registered non-profit organization offering martial arts training for youth and adults, has set its 2009-1010 school year day camp schedule. The next starting dates are Monday, Sept. 28, Thursday, Oct. 29, Wednesday, Nov. 11, Wednesday Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 27.

Martial Arts Training Institute offers a free women’s self-defense course. The class meets on Sundays at from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the MATI location, 1490 N.El. Pine Island Road, #7 8 and C, across from Mel’sDiner.

Merit Scholarships announced

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced the names of nearly 16,000 semifinalists in the 55th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Those academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue on in the competition for around 8,200 National merit Scholarships totaling approximately $36 million.

Lee County Public schools students who made the list of Semifinalists are:

Pre-K parents can register at sistrict student office

Parents are now able to register their preschool children for the District’s Early Head Start and Head Start/Voluntary Pre-K programs at the District’s Student Assignment Office in Lee County, Public Education Center in Fort Myers. They can register their preschool children for school at the same office as the rest of their children. The office in Fort Myers is at 2855 Colonial Blvd. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.monday through Friday.

Alliance for the Arts After School Program

The Alliance for the Arts has created an After School Arts Program for students seeking supplementary instruction in visual and performing arts classes. The After School Arts program is offered for students in grades 1 through 8 and coordinates with the school year calendar running through Dec. 18.

Bus routes will stop at the Alliance for the Arts, on the corner of Colonial and McGregor and pick-up time will be 6 p.m. for parents.

Students who do not attend public school are invited to attend as well.

School of High Drama and Over-acting

Mr. Holiday’s School of High Drama and Over Acting once again begins it’s fall season at the Lee County Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers. Three classes will be offered this semester-Acting for Life, Pint Size Performers and My First Movie-to help guide children on their amazing journey to adulthood with skills that will serve them well regardless of the direction their lives take.

n Pint Size Performers begins Oct. 3. This is a six-week class on Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m.

n My Acting 4 Life class begins Oct. 15. This is an 8-week class on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

n My First Movie begins Oct. 15. This is four-week class on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Golden Apple Teacher Recognition

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools kicked off its Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program by delivering 5,600 carnations to each and every teacher employed by the School District of Lee County. Ruth Messmer Florist donated the flowers and the Sheriff’s Department’s V.O.I.C.E. volunteers delivered the carnations to the schools.

The privately-funded Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program was created by The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc., in 1986 to enhance public education by recognizing and rewarding excellence in teaching.

Nomination forms are available at all public schools, The Lee County Public Education Center and the Foundation for Lee County Public School’s office. Nominations must be received by Monday, Oct. 5. All nominated teachers are encouraged to complete an application package. Through a comprehensive selection process, six teachers will receive the prestigious Golden Apple Award at a formal Recognition Dinner on April 16, which will be broadcast live on WINK-TV.
