Cape Coral
Boating class
Boating Class: Basic Skills and Seamanship (BS&S):
Presented by the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 9-10 Cape Coral/Fort Myers now through Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday nights at the Publix located at Santa Barbara and Veterans Blvd.
The cost of the course is $30.
Members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, who are qualified, trained, and proficient in this program, present the education class.
Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate will be awarded. Many insurance companies honor these certificates for rate discounts.
The State of Florida requires that persons 21 years of age or younger complete an approved National Association of State Boating Law Administrators ( NASBLA) course prior to operating a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. Graduates of the BS&S will be mailed a Florida Boater education Identification Card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Yacht Club school days off
The Yacht Club School Days Off Adventure Camp for ages 8 to 12 will offer kayaking, tennis, fishing, swimming, beach tennis and more. Adventure Camp will be held Friday, Sept. 25 and Monday, Sept. 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The resident fee is $25 non-resident psy $30. Pre-registration is required. Little Karate Kids
Little Karate Kids, for ages 3 to 5, is held Wednesdays, from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at Four Freedoms Park at 4818 Tarpon Court. The cost is $45 resident and $50 for non-residents.

This Traditional Japanese Karate-Do program teaches concentration, coordination, and self-discipline all in a format that makes learning fun. The uniform not included but can be purchased from the instructor. There is no class Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 and Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.
School days off Adventure Camp
If children 8 to 12 are looking for adventure and fun on their days off, the adventure camp is for them. It will offer kayaking, tennis, fishing, swimming, beach tennis and more.

Martial Arts Schools
Martial Arts Training Institute, a state registered non-profit organization offering martial arts training for youth and adults, has set its 2009-1010 school year day camp schedule. The next starting dates are Monday, Sept. 28, Thursday, Oct. 29, Wednesday, Nov. 11, Wednesday Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 27.
Martial Arts Training Institute offers a free women’s self-defense course. The class meets on Sundays at from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the MATI location, 1490 N.El. Pine Island Road, #7 8 and C, across from Mel’sDiner.

Fort Myers
Private Pilot Ground School
A Private Pilot Ground School will be offered at Cypress Lake High School on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The course starts on Thursday, Sept. 3, and ends on Thursday, Dec. 17. Registration will be Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5:45 p.m.
The cost of the course is $113 plus the cost of the textbook. The instructor will guide the student through airplanes and aerodynamics, airplane instruments, engines and systems; airports, air traffic control and airspace, Federal Aviation Regulations, airplane performance, weight and balance, aeromedical factors, aviation weather, aviation weather services, navigation charts, publications and flight computers, radio navigation and cross country flying.

Gulfshore Ballet school hosts open house week
There’s still time to register for the 2009-2010 school year at Gulfshore Ballet, Southwest Florida’s only nonprofit ballet school. An open house week continues through Sept. 12, 4:30 to 8:45 p.m. according to the schedule below.

Alliance for the Arts After School Program
The Alliance for the Arts has created an After School Arts Program for students seeking supplementary instruction in visual and performing arts classes. The After School Arts program is offered for students’ grades 1st 8th and coordinates with the school year calendar running through Dec. 18, 2009.
Bus routes will stop at the Alliance for the Arts, on the corner of Colonial and McGregor and pick-up time will be 6 p.m. for parents. Students who do not attend public school are invited to attend as well.

Poster contest for grandchildren
In honor of Grandparent’s Day, which occurs in September, Shell Point Retirement Community is officially extending this annual celebration into Grandparent’s Month by calling upon all creative children to create a poster to depict the positive aspect of their relationship with their grandparents.
Children from across the United States, and even the entire world, are invited to enter Shell Point’s Grandparents Poster Contest by creating a poster to illustrate one of the following three topics: What makes my grandparents so special? What do my grandparents mean to me? What have I learned from my grandparents?
The Official Entry Form and Photo Release can be located online at: www.shellpoint.org. Simply click on the link for Grandparents Poster Contest and print the form. Each entry must arrive by no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18. Entries can be mailed, flat or folded, to the following address: Grandparents Poster Contest, Shell Point Welcome Center, 15101 Shell Point Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33908. Posters may also be hand delivered to the same address, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. only.

Dr. Piper Center needs volunteers
Senior volunteers, 50 years or older, are needed for tutoring this new school year, in elementary schools and head start centers, for The Foster Grandparent Program of Southwest Florida. A tax-free stipend of $2.65/hr and mileage reimbursement of .35/mile is provided for those who qualify.

Teacher workshop
Water education for teachers Saturday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at CREW Land & Water Trust, 23998 Corkscrew Road, Estero. Registration required.
ProjectWET, Water Education for Teachers, a water-based science education using hands-on activities and proven teaching and learning skills. The materials are adaptable for adults and students at all levels.
Participants will be introduced to the instructional materials and teaching activities will be demonstrated.
