Cape Coral Historical Museum set to reopen doors next month

The Cape Coral Historical Museum will once again be open from 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays starting Sept. 8.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. Sept. 26, Museum Day. It is a one-day national event where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country offer free admission to Smithsonian readers, Smithsonianmag.com visitors and friends who present a Museum Day Admission Card while supplies last. It also will give out a CD-ROM by Paul Sanborn on the history of Cape Coral.

The museum has a campus of three buildings surrounded by a memorial Rose Garden and a Native Plant Demonstration Garden.

There are many exhibits showing the unique history of the Cape going back to the time of the homesteaders with an example of a cracker house, as well as the history of the pioneer settlers.

Many more exhibits on the Rosen Brothers Gulf American Land Development Corporation and how the city began and developed over the years, with the Cape Coral Gardens – known as the Rose Garden – Nautilus Inn, Surfside Restaurant, Cape Coral country club, Cape Coral Yacht Club, celebrities and more.

A military room dedicated to veterans can be seen completed with collections of uniforms, ships, planes, lead soldiers and more.

Featured also is the history of city government, as well as police and fire departments, and first schools, parks and businesses, and a 1960s room.

There is also a Native American Room showing an extensive collection of Indian artifacts, arrowheads, tools and pottery, as well as the story of the Seminoles and Florida’s natives, the Calusa.
