Cape Coral
Child fingerprinting
With the assistance of the Cape Coral Police Department, Regions Bank will be offering free fingerprinting for children at the Cape Coral Parkway branch, 1507 Cape Coral Parkway on Friday, Aug. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to fingerprinting parents will be provided with a Home DNA sampling Kit in which they can use to sample and store the child’s DNA. Fishing contest
Take a kid fishing. USA Bait & Tackle is holding a Free Kiddie Catfish Contest for the month of August. Beginning Aug. 1, and ending Aug. 28, kiddie anglers 13 and under can register for free and bring in their catfish for the month of August to USA Bait & Tackle 413 Cape Coral Parkway E, to be weighed. The heaviest catfish for the month will win a fishing package including a 3.5 gallon bucket with top, an aerator, a mity might rod and reel and a dozen shrimp other prizes TBD. All entries receive a dozen live shrimp or one package of frozen shrimp. Awards will be presented on Aug. 29, at a free awards ceremony with music, food and fishing demonstrations. Boating class
Boating Class: Basic Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) presented by the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 9-10 Cape Coral/Fort Myers on Aug. 17, through Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday nights at the Publix located at Santa Barbara and Veterans Blvd.
The cost of the course is $30.
Members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, who are qualified, trained, and proficient in this program, present the education class.
Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate will be awarded. Many insurance companies honor these certificates for rate discounts.
The State of Florida requires that persons 21 years of age or younger complete an approved National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) course prior to operating a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. Graduates of the BS&S will be mailed a Florida Boater education Identification Card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Mariner Middle School

Private Pilot Ground School
A Private Pilot Ground School will be offered at the following schools:
– Cape Coral High School on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The course starts on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and ends on Dec 15. Registration will be Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5:45 p.m.
– Cypress Lake High School on Thursdays, from 6-9 p.m. The course starts on Thursday, Sept. 3, and ends on Thursday, Dec. 17. Registration will be Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5:45 p.m.
The cost of the course is $113 plus a tax. The instructor will guide the student through airplanes and aerodynamics; airplane instruments, engines and systems; airports, air traffic control and airspace; Federal Aviation Regulations; airplane performance, weight and balance; aeromedical factors; aviation weather; aviation weather services; navigation charts, publications and flight computers; radio navigation; and cross country flying.

Little Karate Kids

L.I.F.E. Academy
Goodwill L.I.F.E. Academy still accepting 2009-10 enrollments for students with special needs.
With the start of the school year approaching later this month, the Goodwill L.I.F.E. Academy, a Lee County Charter School for students with developmental disabilities, still has a handful of student openings remaining for the 2009-2010 school year.
L.I.F.E. Academy students who graduate from the school’s Vocational Training Program are guaranteed employment with Goodwill or a community partner for one year.
The school will host an open house on August 20 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The L.I.F.E. Academy is located at 3365-D Seminole Avenue in Fort Myers.

Alliance for the Arts after-school program
The Alliance for the Arts has created an After School Arts Program for students seeking supplementary instruction in visual and performing arts classes . The After School Arts program is offered for students’grades 1st 8th and coordinates with the school year calendar running Aug. 24 through Dec. 18.
Busses routes will stop at the Alliance for the Arts, on the corner of Colonial and McGregor, and pick up time will be 6 p.m. for parents. Students who do not attend public school are invited to attend as well.

Hodges University
Registration for the fall term at Hodges University for currently enrolled and continuing students has begun. Registration for new students began on Aug. 10. Those interested in attending the university are encouraged to call either the Fort Myers campus (482-0019) or the Naples campus (513-1122) to set up an appointment with the Admissions Department. The fall term begins on Sept. 10.
Symphony to hold auditions
The Southwest Florida Symphony will hold chorus auditions for adults and children chorus on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 31, from 6:30 through 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church in downtown Fort Myers.
The youth orchestra auditions will be held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Time and location will be announced.

Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund
After a tremendous response, and in an effort to reach more eligible candidates, the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund application deadline has been extended. Children of military personnel who have sacrificed life or limb should consider applying immediately.

In order to be eligible for a Freedom Alliance Scholarship, an applicant must be the dependent son or daughter of a U.S. Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Guardsman or Marine who has been killed or permanently disabled (100% VA disability rating) as a result of an operational mission or training accident, or who is currently classified as a Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA)
They must also be a high school senior, high school graduate, or registered as a full-time undergraduate student and under the age of 26.
Many parents of scholarship recipients were killed or permanently disabled in such recent conflicts as Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, and the Persian Gulf War.
